Theory & Driving Tests

Once you have applied for and received your provisional license, you can apply for your theory test.   Full details can be found on the gov.uk website, including all the application forms and prices.

The Driving Force will support you through the process of preparing for both tests.  If you need support applying, we can also assist you with this.  Just speak with your instructor.

Driving Theory Test

There are two parts to this test.   The main theory test, which is a multiple choice test containing 50 questions.   Straight after this, there is a Hazard Perception Test, where you will be shown a series of 14 video clips and you will need to click a mouse promptly each time a hazard develops.

To pass the theory test, you must score a minimum of 43 marks out of 50 (86%) on the multiple choice question section and 44 out of 75 (59%) on the Hazard Perception section of the test.

There are many apps and websites that can help you prepare for these tests.  We offer a FREE subscription to Theory Test Pro to anyone taking lessons with us.    Other recommended apps include:

The official book from the DVSA is also available from Amazon, WH Smith and other bookstores.

You do not need to have started your driving lessons before you prepare for this test.  Indeed, preparing for this test sooner will help you to progress more quickly within your driving lessons as you will have a better understanding of signs, hazards and managing the car.

Help to pass these tests can be provided within your driving lessons if requested.

To book your test, visit the gov.uk website linked below. The current cost is £23.

The Driving Standards Test

Once you have passed your Theory Test, you can apply for a Driving Standards Test.

It is important that you do not book this test until your instructor informs you that you are approaching, or have reached, the standards required.  With the current waiting lists of around 3 months, it is very tempting to book your test before you are ready. Please be aware that all instructors are advised not to allow people to attempt the Driving Standards Test if they aren't fully prepared.   By booking without the backing of your instructor, you run the risk of:

  • Failing your test and incurring additional costs
  • Not having access to your instructor's car for the test itself.
  • Your instructor not being available due to holidays etc

Full details of what happens during the 40 minute test can be found here.  Also, there is an excellent test transcript that can be found here which will familiarise you with the test itself.

Your driving instructor will take you through all of this as part of your regular lessons and of course explain/answer any questions you may have.

To book your test, visit the gov.uk website linked below.  The current cost of this is £62, or £75 if booking an evening/weekend slot.
