Frequently Asked Questions

Will my car have dual controls?

Yes, at The Driving Force, we want to support you in the best way possible, therefore dual controls are fitted, giving you peace of mind.  If we ever need to use them, we will always explain why as part of the learning process.

The car used also has a wide range of safety features such as reverse parking cameras, emergency braking system and lane departure warning systems - and of course, the experience and knowledge of your driving instructor.

How many lessons will I need?

Every person is different, every person learns at a different pace and some have the opportunity to practice with family or friends in-between lessons.   Therefore there is no accurate answer to this question.   Typically however, most people require in the region of 40-50 hours of instruction.

Your instructor will inform you when you are approaching the standards required and therefore it is advised you do not book your Driving Standards Test until your instructor advises.

I just want cheap driving lessons, can you help?

Whilst nobody wishes to pay over the odds for driving lessons, remember that the aim is to become a safe and knowledgeable driver and to do this, you'll need high quality tuition.

Our prices are competitive and, unlike some instructors and driving schools, we will not make false promises to you, such as:
- Promises on how many lessons it will take to pass
- Guarantees on when you will pass

What we will do promise:
- You will be taught by a fully-qualified ADI instructor (big chains often use large numbers of part-qualified instructors)
- You will not spend any more time than is necessary parked up talking.  The vast majority of your lesson time will be 'on the move'.

Everyone learns at a different pace and your instructor will support you to get to the required standard as quickly as possible.

What does a typical lesson look like?

Each lesson is tailored to your needs.   There will be plenty of driving practice, work to help prepare for the two tests and opportunities to ask questions.  We will also ensure that you learn to drive on a wide range of roads so that you become a rounded driver, confidently able to tackle new roads and their challenges. We'll help you prepare for the test, but don't teach to the test.

We also provide the opportunity to practically prepare for the 'Show Me, Tell Me' questions and complete basic car maintenance tasks.  This can include checking oil levels, topping up washer fluid, fuelling the car, checking coolant levels.  We'll tailor this element of your learning to your requirements and experience.

A range of top tips on preparing for your first lesson can be found here.

Do you offer 'Intensive' Courses?

Yes, but availability is limited.

Please be aware that intensive driving courses are not suitable for everyone.   You will need a good basic road knowledge prior to starting, must have passed your Theory Test, have an ability to learn quickly and, of course, time to dedicate to it.

If this is something that you are interested, speak with your instructor at the end of your first lesson.   Typically intensive courses have 8-10 hours of lessons per week for 3-6 weeks, although this can vary enormously.

What car will I use for my test?

You will take your test in the same car that you have had for your driving lessons.  Indeed, we highly recommend a lesson immediately prior to your test so that you are at ease with the car and the road conditions on the day.

It is only in exceptional circumstances such as the instructor being ill, car breakdowns or the renewing of a vehicle would this be any different.

Where will I have my test?

Depending on your location and preference, we can support tests being booked at both the Preston and Chorley Test Centres. However, whilst we will spend some time familiarising you with some possible test routes, we don't 'teach to the test', as we want you to be an excellent driver first and foremost.

Your preferred test centre will be discussed with your instructor as part of your lessons.

Do Driving Examiners have to fail so many people a day/week?

The simple answer is no!   You will be judged on your driving standards alone.   Ultimately you are examined on your ability to drive safely, with a very good control of the car and a defensive driving approach.

If you drive to a good standard, you'll pass!

Do you do automatic lessons?

At the present time, we only provide driving instruction in manual cars.

If you are looking for lessons in an automatic car, we would recommend getting in touch with one of the following who are experienced and come highly recommended:
